MASTER IT!!!

“Why are you so angry?” the Lord asked Cain. “Why do you look so dejected? You will be accepted if you do what is right. But if you refuse to do what is right, then watch out! Sin is crouching at the door, eager to control you. But you must subdue it and be its master.” - Genesis 4:6-7

You have some goals for the New Year, I bet. Sure, maybe you're not calling them "resolutions" but either way, there are some things you'd like to be different this year, right? Well here's one you want to be sure not to overlook: mastering sin.

Unlike exercise and diet and probably all the other self improvement things, this one can't be accomplished on sheer willpower. Romans 8:1-2 elaborates:
  • "So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. And because you belong to him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death."
It's the work of the Holy Spirit in you that frees you from sin's grip - not you trying to be a tough guy. You're not off the hook though - you have to commit to this, pay attention to the Spirit's leading, want this freedom:
  • "So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace." - Romans 8:6
He's not going to force you - you have to let Him lead, but if you do there's freedom and mastery over sin's power:
  • Therefore, dear brothers and sisters, you have no obligation to do what your sinful nature urges you to do. For if you live by its dictates, you will die. But if through the power of the Spirit you put to death the deeds of your sinful nature, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. - Romans 8:12-14
Cain refused to subdue sin's influence in his life and paid a big price for it. The same is true for you - deal with sin or it will deal with you. Master it or it will master you. Jesus has come so that you might have freedom so make 2018 the year you start experiencing it. Listen to the Holy Spirit - respond to Him and crush sin's influence in your life - starting right now.

Spark. Big honking bonfire.

When I woke up this morning two things God spoke to my heart after a brief prayer time (1) the verse about God fulfilling our needs exceedingly and abundantly beyond what I can ask; (2) I will be grateful and not be angry, murmuring in my heart complaints to God.

Timely spark for me.

    what is "spark"?

Its a small thing - like the flash on a spark plug that hopefully ignites something bigger to propel you forward.

What People Are Saying...

"Even when I have questions and doubts, I can come here and have honest conversations with God and about God. I come as I am and am always accepted as such. Plus great worship music." - Emily P.

"This is my church home and they are family to me!" - Heidi B.

"You know how people tend to head for the exits really fast after a church service is over? Well that doesn't happen here! People love to hang around after the meeting - and that's a sign of good stuff going on." - Terry C.
